I am now offering my popular sourdough workshops as online classes from my home kitchen (open to NZ and Australia residents, although check in if you live elsewhere as it may be possible to join). These are small group workshops held via Zoom with plenty of opportunities for questions (note, due to privacy online classes are not recorded). I have had many requests for online classes as my in-person workshops fill up fast. I can also reach out further to areas I am unable to visit (or provide a good refresher/update for those who have attended a workshop previously).
An online class is different from in-person workshops but there are other benefits of teaching out of my home kitchen. I have access to all my breadmaking tools, plus the multimedia teaching options available via the Zoom platform. After teaching cooking workshops for 20 years I am enjoying this new addition to my class offerings. I continue to teach in-person classes regularly in Nelson, and the main centres 1-2 times a year.
You can choose to cook along with me to prepare a bread dough – allowing extra time to complete the steps after the class, plus bread baking the next day. A list of ingredients and equipment (you will need a healthy sourdough starter) will be emailed the week before the workshop. You can also choose an optional ‘Sourdough Starter Pack’ (extra $20.00) to be couriered to you before the workshop. This includes a sourdough starter, feeding flour, and instructions on how to revive the starter. Note, that starter packs are available for NZ residential addresses only – no rural addresses as 1-2 day delivery can’t be guaranteed. You can also add a banneton (bread-rising basket) to be sent with the starter pack – these are my favourite fabric-lined bannetons (no sticking!).

Using three simple ingredients – flour, water and salt – combined with basic technique and timing, the most flavoursome and nutritious bread can be created in your home kitchen. For 15 years I have been preparing sourdough bread for my family (and teaching others this skill for 10 years), and have specifically designed my recipes to fit around a modern lifestyle. This traditional bread-making technique slowly ferments the flour and grains to improve their flavour, enhancing starch and gluten digestibility and nutrient bioavailability. In this workshop you will learn:
- How to maintain a healthy sourdough starter – this is key to baking great bread. Note: I won’t be demonstrating gluten-free bread at this workshop.
- Learn to prepare Overnight Rustic Sourdough Bread – this is a free-form bread that is shaped by hand and risen in a banneton (or similar).
- How to use different flours and add additions to the dough such as seeds, dried fruit and spices.
- Timelines for breadmaking to fit around work hours and for weekend baking.
- Discussion on different flours for bread making + where to source quality NZ-grown flour and grains.
- + a Recipe pdf including bread variations.
Date: Saturday in April 2025 – register interest above.
Time: 2.00 – 4.15 pm
Where: Live Zoom Meeting*
*The Zoom link will be sent the week before the workshop date. A quiet house/kitchen and a laptop or tablet are recommended for best viewing. Please make sure you are familiar with using Zoom and have the app downloaded before the workshop. The meeting will be open 10 minutes prior so I have time to sign everyone in, and the workshop will start promptly at the start time. Note, that this is a live class and won’t be recorded due to privacy.
You will need: A laptop or device for viewing, and a pen and paper to take notes. If you are cooking along, an ingredient and equipment list will be emailed the week before. Choose an optional ‘Sourdough Pack’* (extra $20.00) to be couriered to you prior to the workshop including a sourdough starter and flour mix for feeding. I also have my favourite round bannetons including a fabric liner available, you can add these to the starter pack. *Available for NZ residential addresses only – no rural addresses as quick courier can’t be guaranteed, but I can send it to a residential address nearby.
The fine print: Your online booking and payment confirm your place in the workshop. A reminder email with the Zoom link will be sent the week before the workshop. Please check the date carefully. Due to time constraints, unfortunately, I am unable to offer a refund if your plans change, however, I am happy for you to send a friend in your place. Note: Due to the privacy of the attendees the online workshop won’t be recorded. Read my Cooking Workshop terms & conditions HERE.
